Effects of water in ethanol-blended gasoline
If you get any water in a tank of ethanol-blended fuel, you will have phase
separation!!!
When water enters a UST:
o Some water will immediately get absorbed in the fuel
o Remaining water will fall to the bottom. This water-ethanol mixture (phase
separation) will be 50-75% ethanol (depending on how fast water enters the tank). Current
industry water floats do not reliably detect phase separation
o Water floats do detect water, but seldom is there pure water at the tank
bottom
